Spring Lawn Damage? It Might Be European Chafer Grubs

If your lawn is looking patchy, thinning, or easy to pull up this spring, European Chafer grubs may be the hidden cause beneath the soil.

If your lawn is looking thin, torn up, or struggling to recover this spring, you may be dealing with European Chafer grubs.
These pests live beneath the soil and feed on the roots of grass, weakening the lawn from below. By the time homeowners begin to notice the damage, much of the root system is already damaged.
European Chafer has become a growing issue for lawns across our region, and many homeowners don’t realize what’s causing the damage until it spreads.
What Are European Chafer Grubs?
European Chafer is a type of beetle whose larvae—commonly called grubs—live in the soil beneath your lawn.
The grubs feed on the roots of grass plants, which prevents the lawn from absorbing water and nutrients. As the roots disappear, the grass weakens and eventually dies.
Because the damage occurs underground, it often goes unnoticed until lawns begin
showing visible stress.

Signs Your Lawn May Have Grubs
There are several common warning signs homeowners can watch for:
Grass that pulls up easily, almost like carpet
Brown or thinning patches appearing in the lawn
Skunks, raccoons, or birds digging in the turf
Weak or spongy sections of grass
Lawns that struggle to recover in spring
If you notice several of these symptoms, grubs may be present beneath the soil.
Why Damage Appears in Spring
European Chafer grubs feed heavily on grass roots in the fall, then again when temperatures warm in early spring.

By springtime, lawns may already have significant root damage from months of feeding. This is why homeowners often notice the problem when their lawn begins to green up for the season.
Preventing Future Lawn Damage
While grub damage can’t always be fully prevented, properly timed treatment can significantly reduce its impact. Targeting the next generation of grubs before they hatch helps reduce the population and prevent future damage. Early detection and proper timing are key to keeping lawns healthy and resilient.
